"A Miracle in progress"
Most of our matches are held with ticket proceeds going to certain charities. Last October, the NYPD Gaelic Football Club hosted the Tipperary Garda Gaelic Football Club to the Jake Brower Charity Match held at Gaelic Park. Jake is the son of Police Officer John Brower of the 110 Precinct. Jake developed a rare medical condition leaving him severely brain damaged and with a grim outlook at only the age of five. We played and won the game for them.
The following letter was written by Jake's father John to the NYPD Gaelic Football Club and to all of the club's supporters:
TO: The NYPD Gaelic Football Club,
I just wanted to thank the club for your support for my son Jake Brower during your last game vs. the Tipperary Garda. It was an amazing game and the N.Y.P.D. prevailed that was great. I wanted to update you in Jake's progress since we saw you last. If you remember Jake is 8 years old. At the age of 5 he contracted a fungal infection in his brain and has had many STROKES AND SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE, leaving Jake devastated, unable to speak, walk, paralyzed on his left side etc. Your fundraiser enabled Jake to receive a much needed medical treatment, one of many that are not currently paid for by insurance. Jake received this treatment late this fall and several weeks later we had a miracle in the Brower Family. Just about 3 weeks before Christmas Jake began to speak for the first time since this happened in January 2003. Jake was able to tell us about life before, during, and now after his injury so all along he was inside unable to communicate at all. Over the next few days and weeks his speaking continued to flourish now he can call us and answer questions. His life and recovery are ever evolving. Over the last month or so Jake has began to take some steps with support but every day Jake gets a little bit better. I just wanted to let you know your good deed and big hearts have really helped an amazing little boy who the doctors gave no hope for any kind of recovery at all. Jake is a MIRACLE IN PROGRESS. Jake has a long way to go but he is well on his way and your club has really helped my son Jake. I want to Thank every member of your Club.
Love,
THE BROWER FAMILY, John Brower (110 Precinct)
This letter best demonstrates why we exist as a club, why we're New York City Cops. It is more than just football.
